COSTELLO ROADSTER FOR SALE ON E.BAY..OR IS IT ?????

Richard M Fairclough
If you type in MG COSTELLO on ebay you will see there is a green roadster for sale, although it has a 'C' bonnet..perhaps you'd like another Peter B. that's if it is a genuine one !!! ????? 2/7/2011

I've seen it as well,

Not sure if it is a genuine Costello, as you say its an MGC bonnet, seems suspicious to me

Paula.

Hello Richard,
two of them are enough, and the last one I bought will keep me busy and drain my bank account , a piece of advice to all of you, never buy an MG with chrome sills .
Cheers

Well it appears to have the MkII reverse pointing manifolds and twin SU carbs, though these do not necessitate a 'C' bonnet. Interesting. He has email so uses a computer but has not been in touch with our site. Makes me wonder. shall contact him in the morning...

My sixpennies....

I have been in touch with the seller - he has very little history on the car and is not aware of what characteristics to look for to see if the car is genuine. I've asked him to study the steering column and the rear of the engine bay bulkhead.

If you look at pictures on the Gallery of other (albeit restored) MkII engine bays - such as those of Peter Hollis, Sven Neilsen and Hans Tabak we should see the original water reservoir bottle at the back of the bay, the oil reservoir on the left front and the floating water header tank. All these are missing on the eBay car.

That said, restored engine bays such as those in the cars owned by Ben Mullaert, Dave Wiggins, Heinz Arndt, JP Giron and Ross Church, you'll see one of more of those elements missing yet those cars all all genuine Cossies.

So how do we know this car is genuine? Well, I have asked Roger to ask Ken and see what we get back....
My personal feeling: someone has grafted on a Costello rear-facing manifold and labelled the car as a Costello conversion.

This car is listed on Ebay again, he has no proof of the legitamacy of the car but still states its a Costello. (very rare)

....but he does admit he has no legitimacy that it is one of Ken's cars. The car is missing a load of history and the rear-facing carbs are the only Costello indicators. Personally I think it's a "bitsa" and not a true Costello Engineering car. It would be good to think that if it was original, previous owners would have made more of an effort to maintain the history file. LW

Hello Richard,
thanks for the hint but one rotten roadster is as much as I can take at the moment . Will take me some time to get the roadster in a condition that would be comparable to my GT, but of course it was my decission to buy .
How is Elvis do you get to see or even drive him every now and then .
Have a nice week
Cheers

Hi Peter,

'ELVIS' is humming like a bird ! I went to an MGOC show today near Harrogate which was excellent. Didn't see Brian Perry, but I understand his wife is Chair. of the Harrogate MGOC. Some very nice cars on dispay, and a lot of new 'rubbish ones'. I see the 'COSTELLO '?? on ebay is struggling to hit £3k!!!
Regards to all..Richard,
